Fatalities in Israel due to rocket and mortar from Gaza

 

24 people have been killed in Israel by rocket and mortar fire out of Gaza since September 2005, when Israel withdrew its settlers and ground troops.

 

Of those, 21 were civilians (19 Israeli and 2 Thai) and 3 were Israeli military personnel.  A list of those killed, and when and where they where killed, is given below (see Table I).

 

More than half of these fatalities occurred during the three major military assaults by Israel on Gaza – Operation Cast Lead in 2008/9 (when 4 died), Operation Pillar of Cloud (when 6 died) in November 2012 and the ongoing Operation Protective Edge (during which to date 3 have died).

 

These operations were ostensibly mounted in order to put an end to rocket and mortar attacks.  In reality, they provoked increased rocket and mortar fire from Gaza and, as a result, 13 people were killed in Israel during them.

 

Outside of these three military operations, only 11 people have been killed by rocket and mortar fire from Gaza since September 2005, the last in October 2011.

 

Note: the deployment of the Israeli missile defence system, Iron Dome, did not begin until March 2011.

 

 

Israeli fatalities in Gaza during ground invasion

 

46 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza during its two recent ground invasions of Gaza (9 during Operation Cast Lead and 37 to date in Operation Protective Edge).

 

 

Palestinian fatalities in Gaza due Israeli military action

 

Since September 2005, nearly 4,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli military action in Gaza and the number is growing remorselessly as Operation Protective Edge continues (see Table II below).
